Automated production of puzzle publications

Sanoma publishes a large number of puzzles. The puzzle sport editorial staff provide, amongst other things, word finder puzzles, crossword puzzles (normal and cryptic), “Swedish” crossword puzzles and logical puzzles. The clues and other puzzle details are often generated by a database application.

The challenge
To automate the pre-press tasks in such a way that the production time is significantly shortened without compromising the flexibility of the production process.

The solution
Logic Use implemented a fully digital workflow for Sanoma puzzles publishers. Pages are automatically laid out using an Adobe InDesign application server.

The editorial staff can, as desired, enrich or modify the results of the various constituent processes.

The result
Because the page production process is fully automated, the editorial staff receives PDF files immediately after uploading the puzzle files. The pages can then be directly checked so that at the time of the compilation of a new issue, the production does not have to be interrupted while waiting for proofs.

The input and result checks integrated into the workflow guarantee a reliable production process and a consistent product.
